Which techniques are used in liposuction surgery?

Liposuction surgery is performed under local anesthesia and heavy sedative drugs called sedation or under general anesthesia in the operation room.

Incisions of 2-4 mm are made on the areas where the marked areas can be reached. Before removing the excess fat from the areas, some solution is injected into the adipose tissue through the small incision lines.

By the solution, not only the bleeding is reduced but also the pain. The solution containing pain killer helps easing the pain.

Excess fat is removed via 3-4 mm incisions with cannulas. If the body shaping operation is combined with liposuction, the removed fat can be transferred into the planned areas after processesing the fat in order to transfer.

At the end of the surgery, the incisions are either left open or closed with simple stitches. The operation is terminated after dressing the patient in a corset.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed With Liposuction?

First of all, liposuction is a body shaping method, not a weight loss method.

The amount of fat to be removed with the liposuction depends on;

The maximum amount of fat to be removed with liposuction is 5-6 kilos. Since liposuction is not a weight-loss method, removing too much fat can lead to serious complications.

Removing 5-6 kilos of fat from a body of 60 kilos and 110 kilos gives different changes. These changes also depends on the gender. 5-6 kilos of liposuction gives different results for men and women. While it is enough to remove 3 kilos of fat from one person, it may not be enough to remove 6 kilos of fat from another person. It means that the amount of fat to be removed in liposuction varies from person to person.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Liposuction?

As in any surgical operation, first of all, the patient should consult a doctor's opinion and a detailed physical examination is required for the procedure. Liposuction is not weight loss method, it is an surgical operation to provide regional thightening and body contouring.

If the patient has excess weight problem, it is more appropriate to get rid of the excess weight by starting a healty diet and sports in the first place. Then, the patient can have liposuction easily especially after losing the excess fat because liposuction aims to remove the excess, stubborn fat that do not go away with diet and sports.

Liposuction is a body contouring method that can be applied to anyone who does not have any health problems that prevent the procedure.

Women, who are pregnant or who have given birth recently are not good candidates for Liposuction. Before the operation, the patient’s health story should be checked by some necesssary tests. The patient should inform the surgeon about his/her allergies or medication to take precaution in case of emergency.

Although age is not an obstacle to have liposuction, due to the age-related skin elasticity loss, the surgeon should examine the patient thoroughly to decide to perform liposuction or any additional procedures including liposuction.

Liposuction Methods

Infrasonic Liposuction

Infrasonic liposuction is an innovation for plastic surgeons provided by the developing technology. While classic liposuction cannulas remove subcutaneous fat with vacuum power by moving the arm back and forth, Infrasonic liposuction cannulas enables to remove the excess fat proportionally by scanning the liposuction areas, with its back and forth around vibration movement itself.

Advantages of Infrasonic Liposuction;

  • Since it removes the fat with its vibration movement, the tissue damage is minimal.
  • Vibrations allow for a more proportional fat removal.
  • It is more comfortable for the surgeon as the cannula moves back and forth around itself.
  • The patient gets back to his/her daily life more quickly.
  • Since it removes more fat each time the canulas  are inserted due to its vibration movements, the risk of the most common post-op orange-look appearance is very low.

Vaser liposuction

With the development of technology, many different methodshave emerged that are also useful for liposuction. The purpose is to increasethe quality and the sucess of the operation and to obtain better results.

One of the methods is Vaser Liposuction. During Vaserliposuction process, the fat is broken and liquified by ultrasonic waves. Italso break sup the connective tissues between the fat. Thanks to this methodthe fat can easily be removed with aspirator.

What are the advantages of Vaser Liposuction?

By ultrasonic waves, during performing vaser liposuction, skin tightening can be achieved by affecting the collagen of the skin. In addition to this, for the patients who are suitable, waist shaping  or desired fit look such as six-packs can also be created with the vaser device.

Depending on the amount of the excess fat removed during liposuction, some sagging may occur in advanced ages. Therefore, in addition to the procedure, tummy tuck etc. Operations may be combined.

How is the Recovery Process After Liposuction?

The patient is required to stay 1-2 nights depending on the amount of the fat removed. On the first day,it is normal and expected to have leakage from the incision holes through where liposuction is performed. After liposucton, it is recommended for the patients to have a shower 2 days later. The patient should wear the body garment as much as possible in day and night time fort he first 3 weeks.

It is normal and expected to have mild bruising and pain that is tolerable with painkillers after the operation.

At the end of the second month, most of the edema has alerady subsides. It may take 6 months – 1 year for the body to achieve its final result.

Around 6-12 months, it is easy to observe the difference before and after liposuction.

How much does Liposuction cost?

Liposuction prices depends on;

Conditions of the hospital to be operated on.

Is Liposuction a weight loss method?

Liposuction is not a weight loss method. By liposuction, the regional fat is removed; thus liposuction is the best body contouring method.

Who is a good candidate for Liposuction?

  • Anyone who
  • Has excess fat on a specific area that do not go away with diet and sports,
  • Does not have excess sagging skin,
  • Does not have any obstacles preventing the operation,

is a good candidate for Liposuction.

How Many Kilos of Fat Can Be Removed?

The amount of fat to be removed with the liposuction depends on;

  • The patient's weight
  • Skin texture,
  • Number of regions to be performed liposuction to
  • Patient's age
The maximum amount of fat to be removed with liposuction is 5-6 kilos. Since liposuction is not a weight-loss method, removing too much fat can lead to serious complications.

How Long should I wear the garment?

The patient should wear the garment for the first 3 weeks.

How Long Does It Take To Achieve The Final Result?

The difference can be observed after the operation immidiately while the long-term result can be seen within 6-12 months.

Are the Effects Of Liposuction Permanent?

The effects of liposuction are significantly permanent for people whose weight is almost fixed and who request liposuction only for body shaping.

However, after liposuction, the patient should continue his/her life eating healthy, otherwise weight gain begins and fat tissues may grow again around the areas where liposuction is performed.

Besides, if the patient is planning pregnancy after liposuction, the appearance of the belly where liposuction has been applied may change.

How Is the Cost Determined?

Liposuction prices depends on many factors such as number of the areas to perform liposuction to, the amount of the fat that should be removed, anesthesia, etc.

Is Liposuction Dangerous?

With the developing technology, the existing systems and nowadays methods are developing day by day. Liposuction techniques are increasing and developing the most with technology. Vaser liposuction is a liposuction device designed with the most advanced technology today. With the Vaser liposuction device, the fat cells are liquefied with the help of ultrasonic waves and the liquefied fat cells are vacuumed and removed from the body.

Even the smallest surgery carries risks. However, when liposuction is applied to the right patient by an experienced doctor, the complication rate is very low and very good results are obtained.

Those who have liposuction surgery share their real experiences on social media and internet forums. Since these experiences are written in line with one's own expectations and wishes, they do not reflect a completely objective truth. Each person's skin elasticity, resistant area, amount of fat to be removed are different, and since liposuction is a personalized surgery, the most reliable information about before and after is provided by the doctor who examined the person.

Does Liposuction hurt?

Liposuction can be performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on patients’ preference. Since the area to be performed is anesthetized, no pain is felt during the surgery. Additionally, liposuction cannulas are very thin, incisions are made very small for liposuction. The patient may feel mild aches and pain for a few days after liposuction. The aches and pain can be easily relieved with painkillers.

What to Eat after the surgery and What to avoid?

First of all, liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery, it is a body shaping/contouring operation. The patients should not forget that there is a possibility to regain the weight and lose the after-operation-shape, unless the patient follows the surgeon’s recommendations.

The after surgery nutrition plan will be explained to the patient by the surgeon in details. However, patients who already follow a healthy diet and sports programme can get help from a dietician or trainer.

After the surgery, the results are permanent in a period time with a balanced diet and sports.

Patients after the surgery sould also pay attentian about weight gain. The patient should be aware of the fact that if the patient gains weight, the amount of the fat will increase proportionally. Thus the effect of liposuction will change.

What is called lumps after liposuction?

Liposuction is not a technique that can be applied to everyone. Liposuction is a good choice for people who has excess fat on specific areas. Liposuction should be performed by an experienced surgeon. If liposuction is not performed proportionally or if the dimensions of the cannulas are not adjusted well, and more importantly, if the body shape of the patient is not taken into account, lumps and bumps may occur around the area after liposuction. For this, the amount of the fat to be removed from the area should be well calculated.

When choosing a doctor, the patient who decides to have liposuction may require to see the surgeon’s before and after photos. Sharing before and after liposuction photos on the website and social media is prohibited in Turkey, but the doctor can show the photos while having physical examination with the patient as a part of the consultation.

Sagging After Liposuction

Patients who are good candidates for liposuction have high skin elasticity. In order to prevent sagging and skin deformation after liposuction, a maximum of 5-6 kg of fat tissue should be removed in one session. The patient may not have sagging after the surgery, if the operation is planned according to the health story and body of the patient.

If liposuction is required as a weight loss surgery and the surgeon removes fat excessively ,it may lead sagging and serious complications.

Can Liposuction be Combined with Other Aesthetic Operations?

Liposuction is an operation aiming to remove the excess fat around a specific area. The patient can have other operations. Liposuction can be performed combined with Abdominoplasty, Breast Reconstruction surgeries and Body Aesthetic Surgeries.

What is Laser/Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser is called what breaking the membrane of fat cells and the connection tissues between the fat tissues by ultrasonic waves and removing the excess fat by an aspirating system.

Laser Liposuction is removing excess fat by breaking the fat cells by laser beams.

What are the health requirements for Liposuction?

All kinds of pre-op tests, analysis and examinations are done before the surgery. If the patient needs treatment, the patient is treated before the surgery as well.

Which areas can be applied Liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery but a body-contouring method. Thus, it can be applied in areas where excess fat is seen around the body such as the waist, bra rolls, the hips, the jowl, breasts for men etc.

Does Liposuction Hurt?

Liposcution for larger areas, the operation is performed under general anesthesia. For the procedures performed under general anesthesia, the patient does not feel any pain since the patient is asleep. For the procedures performed under local anesthesia, micro needles are inserted to the areas where local anesthesia is applied and this may be cause mild pain . Apart from that, no pain is felt during the operations.

Is there any scar left after Liposuction?

There is not any incision scars left after the surgery. The scars are as big as the incision tip which is 3-4mm.

Is There an Age Limit for Liposuction?

Everybody who has completed body developed and has no handicap to prevent the operation can undergo the surgery.

What Should Be Done Before the Operation?

The patient should have all necessary blood tests and analysis as well as a physical examination with the surgeon before the surgery. The surgeon should explain the procedure and all possible consequences while the patient should inform the surgeon about her/his health story such any chronic diseases, allergies, medicine etc. Since blood thinners etc may cause some bleeding problems during the surgery, the patient should stop taking the medicine one week before the operation.

How Long Does Liposuction take?

The duration of the surgery depends on the amount that should be taken from the area. It takes 1-2 hours under general anesthesia.

How Long should stay at the hospital After Liposuction?

The hospital days generally depends on patient’s situation. After some small operations performed under local anesthesia such as jowl liposuction, the patient can be discharged even at the same day after resting for a while. However for the operations under general anesthesia, the operations take longer since the areas performed are larger. Thus, the patient needs to stay at the hospital for early recovery.
