Hair Transplant

What is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from part of the head or body. Baldness is the partial or whole lack of hair growth, and part of the wider topic of “hair thinning”. Hair loss may occur from a small area to the entire body.

Hair loss in some people causes psychological problems, loss of self-confidence therefore they start searching for a treatment.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss can have many causes;

  • genetic factors,
  • infection,
  • drugs,
  • trauma,
  • pregnancy,
  • chemotherapy…

Hair Transplant Treatment

Medications can prevent further hair loss, but they cannot regrow lost hair.

These medications;

  • minoxidil,
  • finasteride,
  • dutasteride can help to prevent further hair loss.

But only hair transplant surgery can make the lost hair regrow again.

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that moves hair follicles from a part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to a bald or balding part of the body also known as the ‘recipient site’.

A plastic surgeon will remove healthy hair from the back and sides of the head, because this part of the head is genetically resistant to balding, to bald scalp. Only one transplant session may not be enough to achieve the best result therefore several transplant sessions may be needed.

Transplanted hair falls out within a few weeks, but regrows permanently within months

Hair transplantation can also be used to reconstruct other parts of the body like;

  • eyelashes,
  • eyebrows,
  • beard hair,
  • chest hair,
  • pubic hair.

And it can also be used to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.

Patient will receive local anesthetic for hair transplantation.

The hair transplant can take from four to eight hours.

Recovery After Hair Transplant Surgery

After the hair transplant surgery, the scalp may be very sensitive.

The plastic surgeon may prescribe painkillers to avoid the pain for several days.

He/she may also prescribe antibiotics for patient to take for several days.

In general patients can go back to work 2 to 5 days after the hair transplantation.

The plastic surgeon will make patient wear bandages over his/her scalp for a few days.

Within 2 to 3 weeks after the hair transplantation, the transplanted hair will fall out, and new hair will grow permanently within a few months.

Most patients see 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months.

The plastic surgeon may also prescribe some medications to help hair-growing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplant

Will my consultation be with a doctor?

It is important to meet a properly qualified doctor at your consultation, not a salesperson. Sales people should not be involved in arranging a surgical procedure, nor will they be able to give you accurate details on the outcomes you should expect, as each case is different.

Will hair transplant hurt?

You will receive local anesthesia for hair transplant so actually you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

After the operation you may feel mild pain, but your doctor will prescribe painkillers for your pain.

How noticeable will the scarring be?

Follicular unit grafting requires tiny incisions to the recipient area and any resultant scarring is generally invisible. There will also be a small scar from the donor area at the back of your scalp, but it will be hidden under your existing hair.

You can ask your surgeon to show you photos of his work, including scarring before the operation.

How long will it take to my hair regrow?

Hair growth is a slow process.  After you have the procedure, initial signs of growth can take from three to four months due to the hair’s natural growing cycle.  As your hair starts to grow, the full effects will take around eight months. At one year post-op, you’ll see the full effect.

Will everyone know that I had a hair transplant operation?

You’ll need a minimum three weeks out of the loop – or you can wear a hat or a wig – due to the healing process, as the surgical area will be red and a little obvious. The area will be shaved down to provide an ideal surgical environment and to protect existing hair.

Will the results be permanent?

The hair follicles that are transplanted are genetically-resistant against baldness, so they will, in theory, continue to grow over your lifetime. But you may start losing hair from different areas of your head therefore you may consider to have another hair transplant operation in the future.
