Likewise, these rates in both men and women vary depending on time, genetic characteristics, age and weight. One of the most important problems for men in this regard is gynecomastia, which is defined as the enlargement of the breasts.

Breast enlargement more than normal in men is called gynecomastia. Mammary glands in both men and women are normally small and undeveloped in men. Breast tissue enlargement, which is caused by imbalances in hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, can occur even though the cause is unknown and no pathological findings are encountered.

Sometimes, some medications, excess weight and alcohol can cause gynecomastia. Gynecomastia often negatively affects the psychology of the person. Men with breasts larger than normal may experience psychological problems such as lack of self-confidence, introversion, disconnection from social life, and feeling incomplete.

During puberty, breast growth begins in boys as well as girls, and this is normal. But in some men, this growth may be above normal. This is the most common cause of gynecomastia. The second most common is the increase in fat tissue in the breast area due to weight gain and making the breast appear larger. Third, depending on the drugs used, breast enlargement may occur. These drugs can be drugs used in hormone therapy or unconsciously used for bodybuilding.

How to reduce the risk of Gynecomastia?

It is possible to prevent excess fat on the breast for men starting from early ages. A healthy diet and regular sports activities should be followed. It is necessary to pay attention to the content of drugs used for various diseases.

If someone is interested in bodybuilding, it is better to consult a specialist before takin any steroids and similar supplements. Bodybuilding supplements used unconsciously have a high rate of causing gynecomastia.

Food high in fat should be avoided.Getting a habit of active life and exercising continuously are of great importance in reducing the risk of gynecomastia.

The above mentioned issues will greatly reduce the risk of breast enlargement, although not completely.

At Which Age Gynecomastia is Seen?

Although gynecomastia is often seen during adolescence, the problem of breast enlargement in men can occur at almost any age. In teenagers during puberty, hormone levels change over time. In adolescent males, if the testosterone level decreases and the estrogen level rises, the growth of breast tissue can be observed accordingly.Gynecomastia due to hormonal changes is a frequently observed condition in adolescent boys.

By time, hormone levels increas and the big breast look may disappears, but this situation, which occurs during adolescence, can cause serious stress and cause psychological disorders. As men age, they produce less testosterone. They're also less active because their movement slows, and they tend to gain weight and have more body fat over time.

Therefore; These changes in hormone levels as more estrogen is produced in the body can lead to excessive breast tissue growth with aging.

Before The Operation

Approximately 5 days before the Operation, the patient should be informed about the medicine not to be taken . Also some blood tests and anesthesia control is needed.

The patient should inform the surgeon about his chronic disorders or medicine taken.

There are different Techniques to perform Gynecomastia

If gynecomastia occurs due to growth in adolescence period, it is usually due to gland (mammary gland) enlargement. The growth is taken out with a small incision made from the tip of the breast. If gynecomastia occurs due to weight gain, excess fat is at the forefront. In this case, it is either taken out by making an incision or the fat tissue is removed with the liposuction method without making any incisions.

If there is an excess skin as well as excess fat, to remove the excess sakin and fat, some different methods can be performed.

If there is both excess breast tissue and excess fat, then both surgical incision, removal and liposuction are performed.

However, with the recent development of technology and the production of new devices, gynecomastia surgeries can be performed without any incisions, only by using the method called liposuction.

Post-Op Period

If the gynecomastia surgery is performed under local anesthesia, the patient can be discharged on the same day. Gynecomastia surgeries, which are more comprehensive and require more surgical intervention, are performed under general anesthesia and the patient should stay 1-night at the hospital.

The patient may feel pain which can be tolarated with painkillers. During the first night, pain can be easily controlled in the hospital environment. After the surgery, a corset is dressed and it is recommended by the doctor to be used for a minimum of 3 weeks in order to prevent the blood and the fluid called seroma from filling the space formed due to the evacuation of the tissue from the area, and in order for the skin to adhere and recover as soon as possible.

In gynecomastia, which is only due to breast tissue growth, the breasts do not grow again. However, if there is excessive weight gain, breast growth may occur again.
