Such problems can be eliminated with breast reduction surgery, and the person can continue his normal healthy life more easily.

It is possible to use many techniques in breast reduction surgery. Some criteria are taken into consideration in the selection of the technique.

These factors are the criteria that affect the success of breast reduction surgeries.

The Reasons Of Breast Growth

Breast reduction surgery differs with one aspect from other breast reacontruction surgeries: it is a plastic surgery performed not only for aesthetic reasons but mostly for physiological reasons. Because women with large breasts have some or all of the problems such as neck, back, low back pain, posture disorders, rashes under the breasts due to sweating, and pressure marks on the shoulders due to bra straps. Genetic features also play a major role in breast growth. In some families, genetically, breasts are always large. Women who previously had normal-sized breasts may also experience breast growth when they gain weight. Childbirth and breastfeeding can lead to enlargement and sagging of the breasts. Hormonal disorders or drugs used can cause breast enlargement.

When Is The Best Time To Have The Surgery?

Breast reduction as a plastic surgery can be performed on any woman who has completed breast development and does not have an obstacle to surgery. The surgery should be performed as early as possible because large breasts cause postural disorders, rashes and sores under the breast in the long term, as well as serious psychological problems in adolescence. At the age of 18, when body development is completed, is the earliest period when surgery can be performed, the upper age limit determines the person's suitability for surgery.

Preparations Before The Operation

Patients planning to have breast reduction surgery should consult a plastic surgeon for detailed information. During the first examination, expectations should be explained in detail and possible risks should be discussed. During the examination, information such as the size and shape of the breasts, skin condition, age, marriage and whether to have children, the new location of the nipple, etc. will be shared with the patient. Before the operation, the surgeon should be informed about conditions such as high blood pressure, smoking, drug habits, and diabetes. Depending on the age of the patient, ultrasonography or mammography can be performed before surgery if necessary.

The necessary tests for the surgery can be done in the hospital on the same day before the surgery. Before the operation, drawing and planning should be done on the breast according to the technique chosen according to the patient. These drawings are very important for the surgery to be completed quickly.

Breast Reduction Surgery Techniques

There are different surgical techniques depending on the size and the severity of the sagging of the breasts. The surgeon will decide which of the techniques is most suitable for the patient with some measurements made during the examinations.

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that takes an average of 2 hours under sterile hospital environment.

1. Nipple Graft Technique:

The first technique is a technique used for very large breasts by removing the nipple and making the breast smaller and then creating a new nipple.

With this technique, a lot of breast tissue can be removed and the breast can be reduced as much as desired, but the patient may experience loss of sensation in the nipple and cannot breastfeed. It is not a highly preferred method.

2. Flap Technique:

The technique is performed by preserving the the nipple and breast tissue alive and the nipple is moved up after the excess tissue is removed.

Since breast tissue is mostly preserved by the technique, patients can breastfeed after the operation and there is little or no loss of sensation in the nipple.

Post-Op Period

The operation is performed under general anesthesia for an average of 2-3 hours. One day after the operation, the patient is discharged from the hospital and return to normal life 7-10 days later. Breast reduction surgery is not a very painful operation, the pain that will be experienced can easily be controlled with painkillers.

Drainage devices are placed in order to prevent minor bleeding after surgery. The drainage devices are usually removed by the surgeon 1-2 days after the surgery. After breast reduction surgeries, scars are definitely left and these scars can be at different rates depending on the amount of tissue removed and the genetic characteristics of the person.

Over time, the scars become smaller or even unnoticiable. It is normal to have edema and swelling after breast reduction. The side effects will subside within 3-4 weeks on average, depending on the patient's recovery time.

Breastfeeding After Breast Reduction

Although almost all of the techniques applied today are aimed to preserve the ability to breastfeed, the success rate is 80-90%. There is a slight possibility that the patient will not be able to breastfeed after the operation.

This situation is related to two issues: The amount of tissue to be removed; Secondly, adhesion and obstruction in the channels we call fibrosis is due to adhesion and obstruction. As a result, it is more preferable not to plan a new pregnancy after breast reduction surgery
